An annual festival exploring big ideas around gender, justice and equality 

All About Women is our annual centrepiece talks festival. For more than a decade, the celebrated event has filled our venues with inspiring moments and buzzy, agenda-setting conversations. This year’s event featured many thought-provoking events featuring international and Australian artists, thinkers and storytellers. Our streaming program highlights include a talk with R. F. Kuang, author of Yellowface, history expert Mary Beard and the inaugural Feminist Roast featuring Jane Caro, Zoe Coombs Marr, Jan Fran, Michelle Law, Nakkiah Lui and Steph Tisdell.

A classical performance for the ages

In March 2024, Arnold Schoenberg's Gurrelieder was transformed into a musical tapestry of monumental scale, featuring an orchestra of 140 musicians and a chorus of 285. This unmissable experience was captured in the renewed Concert Hall to celebrate Schoenberg's 150th birthday, marking the piece as one of the composer's most romantic works.

Chief Conductor Simone Young lead the Sydney Symphony in this extraordinary work for the first time in the Orchestra's history. The event also featured an all-star cast, including celebrated tenor Simon O'Neill and the remarkable German soprano Ricarda Merbeth, who made her long-awaited return to Sydney.

A musical family affair

Generations and Dynasties explores the rich tapestry of storytelling in First Nations culture, passed down from parents to children and among siblings. Like the symbolic passing of the story stick, each event reflects the importance of family, community, and culture.

Two events are available to stream, each spotlighting a different family. The Jarret Family features Wire MC, Tasman Keith & Kapital J and their unique spin on hip-hop, and The Briscoe Sisters features Deline, Naurita and Merindi with their daughters joining them on stage.

Grammy award-winning R&B singer-songwriter lights up Vivid LIVE 

Elevating us with her distinctive old-school R&B style, the British singer-songwriter made her highly anticipated return to the Opera House during Vivid LIVE 2023.

A fresh young talent with old-school soul, London-born singer-songwriter Ella Mai took the pop world by surprise in 2018 with her multi-platinum hit, Boo’d Up. earning her a Grammy Award for Best R&B Song (and a nod for the prestigious Song of the Year). Witness her triumphant return as she performs music from her second album, Heart on My Sleeve, under the dazzling lights of the Concert Hall.

Humour, an unlikely friendship and lots of fish

Entertain your kids with this fun North Pole adventure followingan unlikely encounter between a Polar Bear and a Penguin. After meeting for the first time, the pair get to know one another and learn to survive in a world that is melting beneath their feet...paws...flippers. Paul Curley (THE DIG and Bake!) and John Currivan (The Bockety World of Henry & Bucket) bring this quirky and relevant play for young audiences to life.

Lonnie Holley & Irreversible Entanglements

Visionary free jazz, hip-hop and transcendent vision

American sculptor and experimental musician, Lonnie Holley and free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements took over the Utzon Room in February 2024 for an evening of genre-defying sound. Watch tthe artists create a musical and poetic landscape of Afrofuturist free jazz and experimental noise that will leave you shaken, liberated and uplifted.

Fantastic and impossible imagery projected onto Sydney Harbour

As part of Vivid LIVE 2024, humble textiles were transformed into an animated epic and projected onto the sails. Australian artist and Archibald Prize winner Julia Gutman collaborated with animation technologists, Pleasant Company to bring the artwork to life. A soundtrack by Angus Mills deepens your immersion in the emotional story of the work.
