In the Concert Hall

Contemporary Music

Get ready for a dose of classic Americana as rising indie rock star MJ Lenderman returns to Australia with his exuberant band The Wind, playing one unmissable show in the Concert Hall.

The kind of warm and astringent rock and roll that has felt untethered from time since 1968, when Neil Young released his self-titled début.

Indie rock’s coolest new guitar hero returns

In just a few short years, Asheville, North Carolina singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist MJ Lenderman has emerged as indie rock’s next big thing – a brilliant storyteller and guitar ace whose mixture of classic rock, Americana, country and alternative seems to transcend time. Hot on the heels of his new album Manning Fireworks – hailed by critics as a record that places “him in the pantheon of great singer-songwriters” (musicOMH) and “the mark of a songwriter finding his voice” (Pitchfork) – Lenderman is set to return to Australia with his multi-talented band The Wind, bringing his singular guitar jams to the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall for one night only.

Lenderman, who had been playing guitar with Wednesday and dabbling in solo projects since his teens, broke through in 2022 with his third album Boat Songs – a ramshackle collection of beguiling rock songs and ragged guitar solos that landed atop year-end lists and had critics comparing the musician to Neil Young, Stephen Malkmus and Drive-By Truckers.

After a huge 2023 with his band Wednesday—whose album Rat Saw God became a critical darling—and a collaboration with Waxahatchee on her latest record, Lenderman’s fourth album, Manning Fireworks, confirmed him as one of his generation’s greatest musical talents.

Full of wit, warmth and wonderfully wry guitar licks, Lenderman’s music has seen him hailed as indie rock’s next big thing. Find out why when this multi-talented musician plays the Concert Hall in his first-ever Australian solo show.
